DANCE AND THE LAW

Co-presented by Artists’ Legal Advice Services (ALAS), Canadian Association of Dance Artists, East Division (CADA/East) and Artists Legal Services Ottawa (ALSO)


Join us with entertainment lawyer Lyndra Griffith-Harnden (Edwards Creative Law) for an informative discussion about the common legal issues and questions faced by independent dance artists. From the creation and negotiation of contracts to understanding copyright as it relates to original works of choreography, the session is intended to help dancers understand their legal rights and obligations and to more confidently avoid/navigate legal issues that may arise throughout their careers. 


About the Speaker:


Lyndra Griffith-Harnden has excellent knowledge of the entertainment industry and is committed to properly informing and supporting her clients at every stage of their career. She has represented clients in music, television, film, publishing, performing arts and visual arts.


Passionate about the arts, Lyndra is very keen to serve the artistic community. Lyndra enjoys sharing her knowledge and is regularly invited to present at professional development sessions.

Lyndra is fully bilingual and represents clients in both official languages.

The Creative Commons (CC) initiative was launched at a time when the issues with greater access to creative works through digital media were being addressed on a regulatory level by imposing new copyright restrictions. While it was conceived as a solution to encourage more free sharing of creative works, it can today be understood as offering options to use open licensing as part of promoting fairer exchange for public access to creative works. In this session we will explore how the CC can be part of every creative professional’s business plans, and lead to new opportunities for sharing their works while also supporting livelihoods.

About the Speaker: 


Ariadni Athanassiadis loves to creatively empower others. Practicing under Kyma Professional Corporation (kymalaw.com), she designs legal solutions with clients that align with the context and objectives of their creative work. All solutions are grounded in relationship-centered approaches for working with intellectual property to foster collaborations, generative business relationships and resolve disagreements. To keep her work relevant for her clients, Ariadni volunteers her time to various not-for-profit initiatives, hosts unique I AM CREATRIX meetups and delivers A.R.T. OF LAW training sessions.

This presentation will focus on the basics of copyright in Canada and special considerations for visual artists, musicians, and writers. We will cover practical tips for obtaining copyright registrations and common copyright pitfalls in business agreements. 


About the Speaker: 


Natasha Gulati (Borden Ladner Gervais LLP) is a technology lawyer specializing in strategically securing, enforcing, and commercializing intellectual property rights. Natasha works with businesses of all stages to develop and implement effective IP strategies that align with their business objectives, growth strategy, and exit strategy. She is experienced in patent, trademark, copyright, industrial design, and trade secret law, as well as IP licensing and acquisitions. She has assisted clients in diverse sectors before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and has successfully represented clients in disputes before the Federal Court.
